The Chilean Earthquake
On the 27th of February 2010 at 3:30 pm Chile experienced an immense earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter Scale and it lasted for 90 seconds! This collossal concentration of power and energy was however, well dealt with by the Chilean Government and various charities. This earthquake occurred along the plate boundary where the Nazca plate is moving along against the American plate at 80mm a year. This is a very active subduction zone. Also many of the buildings and houses in Chile were still standing because there have been strict rules about building new houses earthquake proof with special designs and technology since a huge earthquake in 1960. Luckily the army was ready to clear rubble and debris and rescue people straight away after the earthquake.
