The main cause of a major tsunami is if an earthquake occurs underwater and propels a huge amount of water up to the the surface creating huge waves that go out in all directions away from the epicentre. Tsunamis are also very deadly because when they near shallower water the wave height increases and a lot of energy and water will have built up behind it. Also, it is often not the force of the water that kills people, but the amount of debris that is carried along with the immense wave. Objects as big as houses can get carried along with the flow. Many people die from getting hit or trapped in the debris. An example of the type of earthquake that can cause a tsunami is a Destructive Plate Boundary. The plate gets dragged under the other, but eventually it springs back up in to place causing an earthquake that can cause a tsunami.
