Layers.
The crust (which is the outer layer of earth) is separated into six major plates and many smaller plates. In to these six large plates the seven continents are embedded. The plates fit together like a cracked egg shell. The plates continue to move a few centimetres a year since the splitting of Pangaea.Climate expert and geologist Alfred Wegener created the theory of continental drift in 1915. He also put forward the idea of Pangaea. On the Arctic island of Spitzbergen, Wegener found fossils of tropical ferns, which suggested that the island had once lain in the tropics. His ideas were not taken seriously until the 1960s.
